Doesn't the graphics control panel show the exact amount of video memory ?

Were this graphics cards vram-constrained too ?

What happens if you start Allegro programs from a 640x480x8 desktop for
example ?
You mentioned that you tested a very recent CVS tree, but could you try the
4.1.1 WIP release too ? Thanks in advance.
