Lorenzo did the refactoring work. As a consequence, the behaviour of
set_display_switch_mode() on success is now platform-wide and documented.
The patch (already applied) is available at:

Compiled and tested under DOS, Windows, QNX, Linux console and Linux X11.
Untested under BeOS.
