Yes, I think it's a poor design decision not to provide a public exit()
function for any library. They would simply have to make __vga_exit() public
and unregister itself when called.
And of course, this should also solve your problems with the mode selector.

My deepest sympathy ;-)
But have confidence in the future: in France, we missed two World Cups at a
stretch before winning everything after, so...
