I agree, as long as two things are done:
1) A document in 4.0 will outline that the API *will* change, and also in 
what way that will happen. If 4.0 and 5.0 get released tha the same time, 
then there's no reason to do that.

2) The migration from 5.0 to 6.0 will (most probably) break the whole API, 
with things like a fixed source/dest order of variables, and other stuff 
mentioned in other posts.
