Tested the patch with cygwin and I still get the same freeze. The problem
doesn't seem to be related to the GUI updating code. (confirmed by
commenting it out the dialog entry)

BTW! it's quite annoying to get tons of popup error messages when you use
the win32 debug version of allegro, wouldn't it be better to let
sys_directx_message() use a regular printf() instead? IIRC printf has no
effect unless the program linked to allegro is a console app. either that or
replace allegro_message() calls in the library code with a _TRACE macro.
