The new code is in the same range as the old one apparently, which means the
overhead of supporting strange span widths is negligeable. The 8->* code
worries me, as it's ~10% slower on your computer.
I'll try to get the numbers on my computer later tonight if time permits it,
or on the week-end otherwise.
