I would like to fix the long-standing problems relating to the switch
mechanism under Windows before the 4.0 release (screen not restored, bitmap
not locked).

I've attached a patch that fixes all the problems on my current machine and
I'm going to commit it for the purpose of testing. Included is another patch
that adds the support of switch modes to the test program.
