This should have been cd ~/lilypond/Documentation ;)

That’s not the problem … I have this in .bashrc and it’s definitely 
defined and exported:

malte@HOSTNAME ~$ cd $LILYPOND_GIT/Documentation
malte@HOSTNAME ~/lilypond/Documentation (translation=)$
