,pin=0 never worked. The "extpps,pin=0" part was interpreted as a
single unknown option, which means the external timestamping feature
was disabled. It was a bug in the documentation that was fixed in
chrony-3.5. Also, the parser was reworked to check for unknown options
so issues like this wouldn't go unnoticed.

I think that indicates extpps never worked. The refclock was used a
plain PHC refclock. But if it was not rejected as a falseticker, how it
was synchronized?
