You are right pointing out the fact that chrony will never drop a
source. As a matter of fact, my pool actually shrinked going from 4
nodes to 3 (ntp04 was simply removed and not replaced by anything
else.)
I guess that in this case, chrony will reissue a DNS request will get
3 addresses that it already has and will not do anything regarding the
list.
