  Dear Wolfram,

You do not need any trick. The message you see at the bottom of the screen is just an information message.
After selecting "New Container" simply move your mouse to the drawing area and click to draw a rectangle at the size of your choice.
You can also select the "New Container" option if you right-click on the drawing area. It is faster than using the menu bar on the top.

In addition, please note that the tutorial you are using is out of date. We have refactored many tools to make the usage easier. Please print the "TASTE Reference Card" that is present on the desktop of the VM and follow the steps from there to build a system. Now everything is done from the Interface View editor. The tastegui tool is not supported anymore.

Then if you need to know more, you can check the detailed training slides which are on this page: http://taste.tuxfamily.org/ (first link). You will get much more information on the different features you can use.

I hope that answers to your question. If you have any doubt, please ask again !

Best regards,
Maxime

 Subject: [taste-users] GUI (IV/DV) Question
 =======================
   hi everybody,

after installing the taste-vm (vmware-player on debian-7.5/Wheezy) and
running Update-taste.sh i try to
follow .../tool-src/doc/tutorial/tutorial-taste.

 - tastegui comes up
 - edit data view and save - ok
 - edit interface view: gui comes up, but...

a1) when i click "new-container" in the toolbar the gui tells me
"Creation Status: cursor outside the diagram" via the statusbar at the
bottom of the window.

a2) menu-bar/New/New Container -> same as a1

a3) ripped of the new-menu from menu-bar and put it over the drawing to
have coordinates within the drwawing (ugly trick ;). Statusbar turns to
"Mode: addRectangleMode". If i draw a rectangle now (left mousebutton)
the statusbar turns back to "No Selection"

b) deployment view behaves the same.

===> What do i miss?

:) Wolfram

PS: looks like a common pitfall, is there a document about such things
for new users?
PPS: if not - should i start one at the wiki?
