Question is what do I want to put into org.conf to do this. As far as I can see I am defaulting to "vesa" (like this other gentleman) which seems to work OK for me except it always selects 800x600 and I want 1024x768.
Add screen=1024x768 as kernel cmdline argument in boot loader.
Modes "1024x768" are written to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-Screen.conf by
/etc/init.d/system.sh
