I have the same problem on the EeePC. I guess that's a limitation of 
Xvesa/drivers.

I understand you don't want to be bugged about the screen resolution 
each time you boot - but if you're generating a new filesystem, it might 
be for distribution - in which case, you don't want the screen 
resolution already set?
