Hi,

well one should be able to achieve something similar using SawfishPager. 
It can be placed, shown/hidden, resized on demand.

You would need a wrapper function that does remember original values for 
size, position, autohide etc. then the function should resize the pager, 
disable auto-hiding it and place it in the middle of the display.

Lastly the function would need to do clean up, so resetting position, 
auto-hiding setting and size. That should be it.

Maybe I'll cook something up for testing in a few days.
