I'm not in front of a Linux machine, but something along the lines of
pm-hibernate and pm-suspend should be what you're looking for.

Speaking of settings-daemons, does anyone know what handles
'suspend'
on a laptop? I mean if I run gnome3 the laptop correctly suspends if

close the lid and also I can click on 'suspend' in one of the gnome3

well, then how do I get the laptop to suspend? I.e. which part of
gnome3 is responsible for suspend?
