another reason to use nvidia-drivers is the performance decaying over time bug that was reported. I noticed it myself and switched to nvidia-drivers.

Though when I switched from the rt kernel back to gentoo-sources, I also noticed how much clearer the sound was. Something about rt kernel gives a micro-fuzz to the sound.

Apparently, a patch is needed to use nvidia-drivers with RT sources, and some GPL/non-GPL clashes.
Why don't you take a look at Nouveau ?
