What are the advantages of using jack on dbus rather than the classing
jackd?

Several times I've gotten frustrated with the dbus version, since it
either was not starting, kept crashing, or requiring a system reboot
rather than restarting dbus or jack when the server crashed. Has anyone
else experienced this?

if you use a session manager like LADISH http://ladish.org/ then the D-Bus bindings of JACK are required.  i find LADISH and JACK D-Bus to be as stable as classic JACK with QjackCtl, and LADISH provides a nice session management.
