Yes 5.03 is the current. You don't have to use NVDICONF.CPX, the configuration is directly written to the program file. You only need the CPX to change it.
If in doubt, you can check with a hex editor. For 5.03, the structure should be found at offset $38FC4:
The "05 03" is the version number, the "30 08 19 99" the release date, and the configuration values follows.
