I think that's good enough, so I pushed them now
that I got the last doc updates done.

(The changes affect error cases, so anything
already working should still work fine.)

I've tested changes mostly with command line
options.  I'm hoping Uwe (and anybody else using
images a lot) can do a bit more testing through
the SDL GUI before Nicolas does v2.3.1 bugfix
release.

I'll do myself some extra testing with Python UI
before that.
