OK, whatever has changed in the meantime, it fixed the issue. Latest hg pull works fine.

IIRC, I could start hatari with --conout 2 and I would see all the messages printed in my Linux console (starting with the memory test, ending with anything written to screen).

Now it's totally mute, nothing is printed at all. Do I remember that feature correctly?
