I've committed it to the 5.1 branch.

It could be made more flexible if each read & write performed an
implicit seek. Then you could open multiple slices at once and
continue to use the parent file, as long as you were doing it from the
same thread. Not sure if that would be very useful or not ... it's
definitely not the intended use case.
