Even with the restrictions I can think of much better names:

    anim8ion.c -> anim.c
    cntrlmnu.c -> menuctl.c
    sccssmnu.c -> menusucc.c
    vcntrllr.c -> virtctl.c

Furthermore,

    optnsmnu.c -> menuopts.c (etc.)
    tkeniser.c -> token.c
    musicplr.c -> music.c
    trplbuf.c  -> tribuf.c
