The original purpose of fix.sh was to convert line endings and fix up
file permissions in case you downloaded the zip version. And I see that
the .tar.gz release doesn't require you to run fix.sh at all on Unix.
So the problem only exists if you do a fresh CVS checkout, in which case
you need to generate a bunch of other files anyway.
