I'm aware that this font looks much uglier than the current one - but
since nobody could come up with a good looking free font including more
than the base ASCII characters in the meantime, I think using it still
is a much better solution than keeping the current and doing an ugly
hack involving arcane encodings :)

What about DejaVu Sans or DejaVu Sans Condensed (http://dejavu.sourceforge.net)? A bit of self-propagation, I know :-), but what is wrong with it - more than 900 glyphs is not enough?
