my box:   winXP, sp1.    AMD K6-2  500Mhz


crashed....   /msvc7_build/allegro4.1.1/tools/dat.exe
OK........ /mingw_build/allegro4.1.1/tools/dat.exe

release builds.

mingw gcc --version   3.2
msvc7 version =   7.0


the command line i issued was

dat -a -c2 vs.dat  *.bmp

the vs.dat  contained 7 fonts, and the dat had global compression.
