I have not tried. I don't have access to any Unix machines at work
(in fact, they don't even want me to use Mutt for win32). My other
machine has a non functional sound card (it's an old laptop, and
its sound card is known to be flaky with Linux).
I'm not sure if it is a "problem" though. It might just be that
with 8 bits precision, noise is inevitable, and that Allegro just
does what it can with what it has.
In any case, to see if the problem is reproducible, you just have
to compile and run the sample program I sent, while making sure
you have in your allegro.cfg (or assimilated):
sound_bits=8
ossdigi_bits=8
since these are the source of all problems, I think.
