Do you mean that we should have a directory into which we can drop C
source files and then these files are compiled into the dat utilities?
(Kind of like grabber plugins at the moment).

Well, it does require re-compilation of the tools, but I suppose if we
write it in a general enough manner there won't be any conflict between
different addons.
