I sometimes use DOS for a smilar reason: it's fast.
I once ran a series of Monte-Carlo simulations for something or other, and under
windows, the DJGPP version ran about 10% slower than under pure DOS, and with
MinGW it was even slower.
While I doubt games require the processor power that program did, Allegro is
also used for other things besides game programming.
