How about 3.9.99 for the unprefixed one, and 4.0 for the prefixed one? The 
3.9.99 will be WIP 40 before prefixes get added. A new branch on SourceForge 
can be added so that 3.9.99 and 4.x can be dealt with in parallel. 3.9.99 
will only receive bug fixes, whereas 4.0 will get all the new features.

We can also start planning 5.0 at one point ;)
