Yes, that's normal.  I just tried it on my current setup and it dumped
fine.  If that's a feature of glibc 2.2, then things are improving.

I think this may be due to a typo of mine that meant "configure
--disable-pthreads" did nothing :-P.  IIRC, it was fixed in CVS,
so try that or 3.9.39.
