Well, you often want to convert, say, input from a file. I was
playing with vim 6 about one week ago, and it can set various
options about encoding (the internal one, the autodetection of
the ones in loaded files, etc).
Now, I give examples, but I don't disagree with what you said.
This UBUFFER stuff is not actually needed in the lib.
That said, I resent the "char tmp1[64]" stuff very much :)
