gpsd may be able to put the device in a manufacturer-specific mode other than NMEA,
and the resulting time offset may be a bit less than with NMEA.
e.g. for devices using the SiRF chips.
but it might be already doing that. you called the source NMEA but it may actually
be SiRF binary on the RS232 line.
anyway, such serial time information from a GPS device is almost always less accurate
than a network time source. and it does not need to be, it is sufficient when it can provide
time information to within about half a second to set the absolute clock time, and then you
use the PPS for the precision sync.
