That was my thinking too, to reduce number of wakeups when not
synchronized. Maybe it could be set to a maximum of
DRIFT_REMOVAL_INTERVAL and the previous value.

Also, now that the interval is dynamic, maybe DRIFT_REMOVAL_INTERVAL
could be increased back to 4.0 seconds?
