Lets refrase this. What I saw is that the offset was slowly
increasing
until it reached peak of 300 uSec. This is caused by the temperature
change of the system clock oscillator. After the temperature is
settled the offset slowly decreases again to its initial value.
Does it improve when poll is set to 2?
I've tested a few units using poll 2 instead of default 4 and they
actually
are not affected at all anymore by the temperature changes caused by the
air-conditioner. This is really good. I do not see a significant
increase
of noise either. So I'll stick to the poll 2 setting.
The way that chrony ( rather than ntpd) works means that the noise is largely
separated from the poll considerations. This is not quite true, as the longest
term noise can be made slightly worse, but chrony averages at best over the
past 64 measurements, not effectively the past 4 as ntpd does (actually ntp is
worse than that, since it throws away 80% of the measurements).
