Re: Road to 3.0, core ISO size and UTF-8

Hi all,

I wrote original article about gettext in bash scripts (boxes) for
SliTaz and very glad my work will find its place in SliTaz roadmap.

Gettext is vital for making complete uptodate localizations upstream.
In fact, UTF-8 is not as important as gettext. For example, there are
Windows-1251 and koi8-r single byte Russian encodings. I simply do not
succeeded with them and gettext in SliTaz from first try, I'm sure it
works somehow.

But I do prefer UTF-8 because it makes a lot of things easier.

As for ISO size, I think adding ripped version of Abiword and Mplayer is a step
backward. Any word processor or a player in SliTaz would never be
complete because they need plugins, spelling dictionaries, codecs,
hardware accelerated video drivers etc to work comfortably. It is also
a cut of choice, for example I prefer Xine and VLC + Google Docs /
OpenOffice.

Can we do network oriented, fully localized, UTF-8 based distro
without both Abiword and Mplayer which still fits to 128Mb? It would
be in the spirit of original SliTaz.

My vision of ideal SliTaz is <= 128RAM <=26Mb + gettext + UTF-8. No
AbiWord, Mplayer etc.

Iso size is also important for network boot time.

Making two official flavours -- normal 128RAM and large 256RAM with
AbiWord and Mplayer may be good option.
