Maybe you should simply comment the line in themes/Makefile[.in] which unpacks 
StyleTab and simply do it manually afterwards? (StyleTab is a huge theme, it 
is not recommended using a compressed version of it - it's already slow 
enough, even more in 1.9 than in 1.8 - due to it's outer space fancyness).
